The Authentic Self
What truly constitutes one's authentic self?
Authenticity, concerning the self, pertains to the degree to which an individual's thoughts, emotions, and behaviors are sincere and congruent with their own values, beliefs, and personality traits. It involves staying true to oneself, refraining from pretending to be someone else merely to please others or conform to societal expectations. Authentic individuals can openly express their genuine feelings and opinions, even if they are unpopular or unconventional. They are comfortable with their imperfections and vulnerabilities.
Authenticity rejects self-deception and the portrayal of a false image to others. Instead, authentic individuals strive to live in a manner consistent with their innermost selves. They aim to build meaningful relationships based on mutual trust, respect, and understanding. Authenticity is viewed as a crucial aspect of psychological well-being and personal growth, linked to higher levels of self-esteem, happiness, and resilience.
Numerous studies have delved into authenticity, exploring its definition, measurement, development over time, and factors influencing an individual's ability to be authentic. One widely used tool for measuring authenticity is the Authenticity Scale, developed by psychologists Brian Goldman and Michael Kernis. This scale evaluates an individual's authenticity level based on their self-reported experiences, including feelings of self-awareness, personal congruence, and existential authenticity.
Other studies have investigated the relationship between authenticity and various aspects of psychological well-being, such as self-esteem, life satisfaction, and emotional regulation. Research indicates that more authentic individuals tend to possess higher levels of self-esteem and life satisfaction, demonstrating better emotional regulation.
Or in short: being authentic, aka true to yourself, is not only incredibly powerful but also fulfilling. And when giving it more thought, of course, it is! Imagine a world where you can simply be who you are, with no hiding, no masks, no external expectations to adhere to, doing what you love, and loving what you do and who you are. Like, duh!
If I say, the world would be a better place if you step into your authenticity, it ain’t no woo woo, it’s a fact.
