How to activate your inner guidance - in 3 steps

Josephine Dumont, Mindset Coach

It is not rare that a client may say to me “I don’t have an inner voice” or “I don’t know what it is saying”. In those instances I like going back to connecting the client with their body and emotions right now or when they think about a certain topic.

I am certain the voice is there, in all of us. Some may call it your future self or higher self, intuition, gut feeling, or ancestors giving you advice. It is all correct, use whatever resonates most with you. I am also certain that thanks to societal and external pressures we have learned to be masters in ignoring this inner guidance.

Because it may not be what you are “supposed” to do, or what others would be doing.

All that doesn’t matter.

What matters is that you, for yourself, make the right decisions for yourself, and no one else.

Here are the 3 steps that I use to get in touch with my inner guidance, if you have any further tips, I would love to hear them in the comments below, or send me an email!

1. Get in tune with physical rather than mental signals

For some people, their inner voice may show up as an actual voice in their mind, but more often than not it is way more subtle than that. Instead of waiting for a voice to pop up in your head, telling you to go left or right, try getting back in tune with your body. Get aware of physical sensations and experiences.

This can be practiced through being still and doing a body scan, meditation, or mental fitness training based on your senses (for example intently listening to what is close and far or fully focusing on the temperature when breathing in and out).

2. Be curious about the signals and allow them to grow rather than shutting them down immediately.

If there is something popping up for you, like a very specific longing for a change in career or starting a new habit, or picking up an old hobby again, allow it to unfold. Don’t immediately suppress it, rather be curious about it. Ask yourself, how it feels like when you think about it. What would change for you if this were to happen as you imagine it? If there were no limitations and anything is possible, what could happen?

Dare to be creative and go wild when thinking about this. Engage with your inner guidance and play with it, the more you let it be the easier it gets to find and listen to it.

3. Stay connected to find out whether you are on the right path

There will be small (or big!) signs to show you, you are on the right track. You may make a new connection to someone in the field and together you spark ideas of what you could try or more people show interest in your new endeavours. Another way to almost fail-proof and know whether you are on the right track is to regularly tune into your newfound inner guidance:

Does what you do, spark excitement or feel super light and motivating? You are on the right path.

If it feels daunting, heavy, and hard it may not be and you should adjust. (Please note, I am NOT saying you should ever give up when things get hard, but rather find a way that may work better for you!).

Now it is up to you!

Where would your inner guidance lead you, what would it suggest you do, and do you have the courage to follow it?

If the answer to the last question is YES, let’s work together and create your very personal strategic plan that gets you to achieve what your heart is longing for.

Just because no one else has done it before, doesn’t mean you can’t be a trailblazer, and with a coach in your pocket, you will be unstoppable!
