The role of emotions in goalsetting (and getting)

Josephine Dumont, Leadership Coach. Mindset Coach

When it comes to setting and achieving goals, many people focus on the mechanics of goal setting, such as creating SMART goals and developing action plans. While these strategies can be effective, they often overlook an important aspect of goal achievement: the role of emotions (yes, dear fellow overachievers out there: feelings)

Emotions are powerful drivers of behavior, and they can be used to anchor goals and motivate action. This process, known as emotional anchoring, involves linking a desired emotional state to a specific goal. By doing so, individuals can tap into the power of their emotions to motivate action and stay committed to their goals.

Or in other words, it’s the continuous excitement of the outcome and falling in love with the journey.

How emotional anchoring works:

  1. Identify the desired emotional state: Start by identifying the emotional state that you would like to experience when you achieve your goal. This could be a sense of accomplishment, joy, pride, or any other positive emotion.

  2. Connect the emotion to the goal: Once you have identified the desired emotional state, connect it to the specific goal you are working towards. For example, if your goal is to run a marathon, you might anchor the emotion of accomplishment to crossing the finish line.

  3. Use visualisation: Visualisation is a powerful tool for emotional anchoring. Take some time to visualise yourself achieving your goal and experiencing the desired emotional state. Imagine the sights, sounds, and sensations of achieving your goal and feeling the associated emotion.

  4. Use positive affirmations: Affirmations can also be a powerful tool for emotional anchoring. Use positive statements to reinforce the emotional connection to your goal. For example, "I feel proud and accomplished when I run a marathon."

  5. Revisit the emotional anchor regularly: Finally, it's important to revisit the emotional anchor regularly to stay motivated and committed to your goal. Use visualisation and affirmations on a regular basis to reinforce the emotional connection to your goal. (ie practice, practice, practice)

Even though emotional anchoring can be a powerful tool for goal achievement, it's important to note that it's not a magic bullet. Achieving your goals still requires consistent work, commitment, and a willingness to face challenges and setbacks. However, by tapping into the power of your emotions, you can stay motivated and focused on your goals, even when the going gets tough.

So, the next time you set a goal, take some time to think about the emotions that are associated with achieving that goal. By anchoring those emotions to your goal, you can tap into the power of your emotions to stay motivated, focused, and committed to achieving your goals.
